My Midnight Reads

What is a Midnight Read?

I talk about "Midnight Reads" quite a lot. You might be wondering: "What is a Midnight Read?" Well, a Midnight Read is one of the best books you've ever read—we're talking about 6 or even 7 stars here. These are the books that keep you up all night just to know what happens next, and they stay with you long after you've finished them. If a genie were to grant me a wish, I would wish to read these books for the first time again:

Titel: The Poppy War

Author: R.F. Kuang

Genre: Historical fantasy

I wrote about the Poppy War quite some times now, and obviously it deserves to be on here.

This book left me haunted, and made me sob for hours. If you haven't read it yet, what are you waiting for?!

Titel: The Secret History

Author: Donna Tard

Genre: Literary fiction

This book is one of the best books I’ve ever read. The writing is so beautiful and strong. The book has so many different layers, that gives every word an hidden message.

There is an unreliable narrator, which I love in a book. I don’t think that I or my friends will ever shut up about this novel.

Titel: My Dark Vanessa

Author: Kate Elizabeth Russell

Genre: Literary fiction

Damn this book... After I finished reading it, I stared at the wall for half an hour and cried. The book is truly heartbreaking and incredibly well-written.

I want to read it again, but I don’t think I can take that.. (Also check the trigger warnings of this book, before you read it.)

Titel: Vicious

Author: V.E. Schwab

Genre: Sci-fi, fantasy

I love some amazing villains in a book and this duology does that marvellously. Schwabs writing style is very strong and this book left me yearning for more of her work.

Read more about me thoughts of this book here.

Titel: A Little Life

Author: Hanya Yanagihara

Genre: Literary fiction

I think we have a theme here: books that crushed my soul. Well if that’s the theme, this book can’t stay behind. I still think about the characters and the story very often.

Sometimes you finish a book, and sometimes the book finishes you. I think that’s all that I can say about this book. (Please check the trigger warnings before reading it!)

Titel: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

Author: V.E. Schwab

Genre: Historical fantasy

A girl that lives forever; but everybody forgets her. She has only one goal in het life: to leave her mark.

This is a beautiful story about Addie being a muse for artists throughout the centuries. It gives you a good cry at the end, so obviously it deserves to be on here.

Looking back after writing this list, I think that I see a pattern: Heartbreaking, heavy on the trigger warnings and books that haunt me in my sleep…
